Leeds Library & Art Gallery
This architectural building in Central Leeds houses fine art, artefacts and rare books together with over 250,000 books journals and newspapers. The Art Gallery has collections of modern and contemporary British Art and Sculpture. As such fire protection was a major priority for the client.
The challenges
- The library has hundreds of visitors daily, meaning disruption had to be kept to a minimum.
- Grand, ornate and decorative finishes made installing cables difficult.
- High and difficult-to-access spaces such as the Central Atrium and the decorative Tiled Hall Café with its vaulted, tiled ceiling meant any new system must be installed whilst being sensitive to the architectural quality of the building.
- The existing fire alarm system was old and out-dated with certain areas in need of additional smoke and fire protection.
Solution
Core to our service delivery was our collaborative approach with the customer.
Our experienced team conducted multiple surveys of the building establishing what could be re-used and enhanced and what would need to be installed as new. Throughout this process, we liaised with the City Council to ensure any work wouldn’t impact the integrity of the building. All works were carried out overnight so that visitors to the library would not be impacted.
Technology provided
- A hybrid system of hardwired and wireless field devices was installed. The Ziton ZP system was selected as it is able to seamlessly mix hardwired and wireless devices.
- Detectors and call points were replaced and connected to the existing cabling.
- Combined addressable detector and sounder devices were installed to provide a more even distribution of alarm audibility levels around the site.
- Wireless and Aspirating detectors installed in difficult-to-access areas.
Outcome
The project was a success and a great example of applying different fire alarm architecture and technologies to fit the needs of building without affecting its decorative finishes.
