Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel, London
The Jumeirah Carlton Tower is Jumeirah’s flagship hotel in the heart of London’s fashionable Knightsbridge.
The Hotel are currently undergoing a major refurbishment project covering all areas of the 17-storey building. Interiors will be remodelled to include a redesigned and enriched guest arrival experience at the hotel lobby entrance, the creation of a celebrity destination restaurant on Sloane Street, a rejuvenated rooftop health club overlooking Cadogan Gardens and a new spa with its 20-metre indoor pool.
The Hotel needs a complex fire alarm system
All guestrooms and suites will be completely refurbished and reduced in number from 216 to 188 with the introduction of new Signature Suites and Junior Suites, which will capitalize on the hotel’s views of the London skyline and the private Cadogan Place Gardens.
The Hotel needs a complex fire alarm system which will ensure the safety of their guests and staff, facilitating quick and efficient evacuation if needed.
The challenges
- The new fire alarm system must comply to BS5839:1 category L1 standard and must include voice evacuation.
- With 188 guest rooms and suites, plus a multitude of open, public zones, a complex system is needed which fulfils the architect’s need to have clean and clutter free surfaces.
- Over 2,500 field devices are needed, which means we must co-ordinate with the building team to house the equipment appropriately.
- A system is required which only alerts those in immediate danger, helping to minimise disruption to other guests.
- High communal spaces make installing detector systems challenging.
Solution
A project of this size and complexity has meant we allocated a dedicated on-site project manager to work with the architects and their team. All our equipment is sensitively installed whilst remaining compliant with BS5839 at all times.
Technology provided
- The Gent Vigilon fire system was selected due to the requirement for combined sounder VADs (Visual Alarm Devices) to be installed in each bedroom and bathroom.
- Gent Winmag graphics software has been installed for a colour graphics PC in the Security Control Room.
- Complex voice alarm speakers have been installed throughout the building, including all bedrooms and bathrooms. These unique systems are designed to only sound in the room where the fire originates, alerting those in immediate danger as well as giving staff time to confirm if there is a fire. If the search time elapses or the alarm is confirmed, then the hotel reverts to a full evacuation.
- Our project manager has ensured all equipment is in keeping with the high-end design of the hotel including switching from standard smoke detectors to concealed aspirating detectors. Similarly, the ceiling void detection has needed to be revised in the high-profile communal spaces to avoid access hatches. All works have been carried out to the BS5839 standard.
